Gives cops a bad name

This happened a few weeks ago, just a couple miles from here.

A regular citizen is at the counter, buying a roll of mints. An easily excited off-duty cop is behind him in line, and gets it in his head that the guy is shoplifting the mints. The citizen doesn't appear threatening and makes no movements indicating that he's doing anything other than buying mints. The cop draws his gun (in a fumbling holster malfunction that would make an academy recruit cringe), and aims at the citizen. Then the cop, who must think that the citizen is a threat warranting lethal force, to place his hands in his pocket. This situation was really close to another "officer involved shooting of an unarmed innocent man." Luckily, no blood was shed.

The particularly dangerous issue here is that if someone claiming to be a cop pulls out a gun when there's otherwise no distress at the counter, a reasonable person might conclude there's no reason to believe he's a cop but rather a threat. Another person more capable in self defense might have tried to disarm or incapacitate the threat with deadly force and been justified. Someone pulls a gun on you... that's serious business. Very serious business.

Whether you're a cop or just a good samaritan, be very careful about presenting your gun in a situation that you aren't 100% sure of. Good way to get yourself killed or kill someone over nothing.

My initial reaction was "This guys not a cop" but after reading the response from the police chief my reaction changed to anger. This kid in the video needs to find a new line of work before something worse happens.

Exactly Southy. If he draws his weapon over a roll of Mentos, what do you think that he's going to do when shtf ? He's probably better off being a guard at a gate checking employee badges.
