A Potential Problem just out of the Gate at my Small Ranch

I was relaxing here on my small ranch. My gate opens up onto a state highway. A white pickup and then a black SUV showed up just before sundown. I looked at them through binoculars and didn't recognize the vehicles.

I jumped on my Polaris 500 armed with my Kimber Pro Carry HD II (38 Super) and a cellphone to ascertain what was going on. I got about a third of the way down the road and they both took off toward town.

Since I didn't get close enough to get license plate #s or see the individuals, I didn't immediately call the Coryell County Sheriff's Department. I did call them this morning and discussed what I observed last night with a detective.

I'll watch for these people. My guess is that it was a drug deal or something similar.

I live about a mile and half outside of the city limits with the state prisons in the distance and well within view.

Seems like a lot of trouble finds its way out of Killeen.

Of course, it could have been some folks who got lost and were regrouping. Back in the eighties, I got lost in the middle of the night on the other side of I-35 around Granger and ended up going all the way up to Temple before I figured out where I was!

Just keep your eye peeled & carry a ranch rifle J.I.C.

Good luck!

Exclamation New Look Hospitality!!

It's time to load up 2 or 3 high capacity AR magazines, keep the AR within easy reach and post a sign at the
now locked gate:

Aggie, you live in Texas, and the cartels are a stone's throw away. What if you had seen one of their faces, or what if they just thought you saw their faces. They have a very strident way of dealing with witnesses.

I'd lock everything, load everything and get a SimpliSafe Alarm System.

My MC had a member killed for this type of stuff. And that was 1979, the hoods are more blood-thirsty now. I don't go anywhere without a pistol and knife polished in the Japanese tradition.

I agree with Lineman. IMO, your first mistake...assuming just one person per vehicle you was already out numbered 2 to 1 and probably also out gunned. There could have been 2, 3, 4 or more in each vehicle. They could have been looking for Uncle Fred's ranch or some sweet tea and BBQ but why take a chance. I would not have went out to meet and greet without a fully loaded M1A, AR10, AR15 or some type magazine fed rifle or at least a riot shotgun and double OO buck.

And sometimes we are just paranoid. I have experienced more than one time a non-issue became an issue because someone overreacted. It is good to exercise caution but no need to be paranoid.

Agreed, but honestly, where in America is this non-paranoid region?

Do you lock your car when shopping? My wife and I do, even if we can see the car.

Do you have good locks on your house and outside lights? We do.

Did you make it a point to meet your beat cop? It's a good idea.

Believe it or not I've heard of thieves that read wedding announcements. The entire family will be gone for at least 24 hours, maybe make a weekend of the outing. The crooks bring a van and empty out an entire house. And because "no one wants to get involved" the chances of police arriving is slim to none.

You know your friends and their vehicles. If a stranger shows up it's either an Amway salesman or a hired killer.

Oh, I do hold my fire until I see his business card, I'm somewhat civilized...

My question is did the vehicles actually come up your drive/road or stay on the highway side of your gate? Seems like the obvious solution is to keep the gate closed and add a "no trespassing sign" in either case.
And yah, if it comes down to it I'm going with a rifle...
