You are indeed correct. General Beauregard is innocent.

As you know, during peace time, the Scottish sport of "bowling" was brought to the USA. Major Robert Anderson was an enthusiast adherent of this new sport and had an expensive "two finger" ball made in Edinburgh. Returning to his command, he lost the precious ball.

However, rumors of war started and Anderson moved his men to Fort Sumter. In this misadventure, General Pierre Gustave Toutant de Beauregard of the South, recognized his friend's horse.

Fearing he would be branded a thief for theft of the major's property, Beauregard ordered, "Get that bowling ball to Anderson even if you have to launch it there..."

The rest is history.
