Beware the Butterfly Effect

Beware the Butterfly Effect…

“In Chaos Theory, the Butterfly Effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic, nonlinear system can result in large differences in a larger state.”

In other words, and in theory, a butterfly flapping its wings in Texas can later cause a typhoon in the Sea of Japan.

Think about it, in mid-20th Century America, an 18 year old hippie, freshman slut in a Honolulu college had sex with an older, alcoholic Kenyan politician on a student visa, who had a wife and child back in Africa. And from this “roll in the hay” comes the collapse and dissolution of the United States of America in the 21st Century.

Interesting isn’t it.
It makes one consider absolute validity of the “Butterfly Effect.”

On an optimistic note, strength and character are forged by the trials of adversity.

We can only hope his debacle as President will awaken the strength and character of Americans who have been lulled into complacency through soft, easy living.

It all evens out, Chuck. Look at all the women I went through during the club years. It is possible that my dalliances were with a Rwandan babe whose bastard offspring aided in killing one million of their own people.

In many ways, my conduct plus the butterfly effect could have done more for population control than Planned Parenthood. It makes you re-think the foolish moves of youth...

I'm not so optimistic. Most people believe this is a unique, watershed moment when actually it has happened many times in history.

Review your history of Athens and Sparta and you'll find similar diverse thoughts on how a "successful" country should be run. Then also study what it took to drive the Persians back out of the country.

We tend to look at those series of conflicts as victories. Looking at the four main battles, (which includes Thermopylae, Plataea and two others whose names I've forgotten) every one of them was technically a loss. They were so severe that the reason Xerxes never left Persia again was simply the cost.

Is that what's going to have to happen to us? We have to fight sloth and debauchery to such ends that both the heroes and villains are bankrupt?

It's not just Barry. It's the Repubs and conservatives who will vote his way on any of a number of issues that are critical IMO! And they appear to ready to give us a John Boehner clone.......why bother?

By a strange coincidence, the nickname of the redhead I took to senior prom was "Fire and Death."

Two things. One, Harry Callahan once said that there was nothing wrong with a gunfight as long as the right people got shot. So death might actually be a good thing.

My second point deals with grace, culture and poetry. As you know, I'm a Renaissance hoodlum. I cite the musings of my Uncle, Don Vincenzo, a noted arsonist during the 1930s. Any failing, but over-insured business was known as a "candy store." He recited:

"Take a can of kerosene, put it on the floor,
Take a match, make a scratch,
No more candy store..."

So, sometimes "fire" is a good thing, too.
