Shooting you own child

Early this morning there was an argument between an older gentleman and his 43 yr old son. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol was involved. Everything has been turned over to the District Attorney.

The argument got to a point where the son pulled a gun and began waving it around saying he was going to shoot the father.

The father pulled a gun and shot multiple times into the son's chest, fatally wounding him. Medics were called but the son had expired.

This got me to thinking about how difficult it would be to take the life of your child, no matter the age. My line of work has hardened me and it takes a lot to shock me. I just cannot imagine any circumstances where I could intentionally shoot one of my children.
I would rather them shoot me than me shoot them.

Am I alone in feeling that way? Have we, as a nation, became so calloused that blood kin no longer matters?

I can't conceive of this either. Very possibly a case of failed proper parental influence. There' a lot about this situation we don't know about. My son is 37 years old and has started his own family. My wife and I spent MANY a long hour making sure he knew right from wrong and what the consequences would be if he did not know right from wrong. We are proud of the way he turned out. Sadly it looks like it ain't the way it used to be. If you know what I mean.

I think it is impossible to imagine because our upbringing and our moral character that has been instilled in us we could never believe this scenario would ever occur. I do not have any children but I know I could never even point a gun at another family member no matter how angry or upset I may be at the time. It is something that is just is not part of my thought process. I think when we see things like this in the news it just makes us all sick.

OK, I've lived longer than I deserved so I wouldn't defend myself but I would defend one of my grand kids. Yah, no, that's no fun thinking about.

The only way that it would be acceptable is if the child/adult was threatening another family member of third party with imminent death or great bodily harm.Even then it would certainly be a life altering moment.
