Unhappy Makes me want to cry

Meet 'Captain Crunch,' the Pentagon gun muncher that has destroyed 1M firearms | Fox News

When I saw this article today, I became sad. Reading about all those guns, parts, mags being eaten alive. "Oh, the horror. Oh, the humanity" (from the Hindenburg explosion reporter. )

I feel the same when I hear about them crushing old cars. We are losing our classic cars and their rare parts.

What are your thoughts about this weapons disposal?

Guns are dangerous. They need more of these wonderful crunchers.

Don't we sell F18s and F16s to countries around the world, to the middle east? Destroying a few million handguns or rifles isn't accomplishing much.

Back in the 50s and 60s couldn't you buy military weapons by mail? Maybe I'm dreaming.

I believe what your thinking about is the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

“There were days when approximately 2,500 weapons, mostly rifles that were deemed unserviceable, were shredded using Captain Crunch,” said Susan Lowe, a public affairs specialist for the Defense Logistics Agency, the overarching government organization that oversees the demilitarization work done at Anniston. “Approximately 500-600 pistols that were deemed unserviceable can be demilitarized in a day using Captain Crunch.”
If they are unserviceable, then they are probably unsafe, or at the very least inaccurate.

I hear you, but there must be many parts that could be salvageable. Why destroy everything?

Mail order firearms stopped shortly after the Kennedy assassination. Prior to that you could order all kinds of new and war surplus weapons. Probably a good thing you can't get them that way any more but I'm not sure it's saved any life's.

I remember a friend bought a Italian Carcano right after the assassination for I believe way under $100. The military weapons I also thought were available obviously not full auto.
