Q for X LEOs

We have more than a few X-LEOs on this forum that carry concealed daily and share all of our reasons for doing so. However, when you were on the job, how did you really feel knowing that regular citizens could and would be possibly carrying concealed at the time that you had dealings with them in your course of work. Any tips for us carrying civilians if we find ourselves doing unscheduled business with our protectors and servants in blue?

In Georgia, it's all in how one handles themselves prior to and when first approached regarding 'unscheduled business'. I show or mention my CC permit as part of and prior to my self introduction to every officer.

Is it required by law to tell them tinman? It is not required in Indiana to tell them up front. I have mixed feelings on this and am interested to see what ex-LEOs have to say.

It's not required to notify the officer you are carrying in Illinois but if they run your drivers license or license plates it comes up.

It is required in Texas. When asked for DL show CCL at the same time.

We are not required to tell an Officer we are carrying in Tennessee. I do feel it's the respectful thing to do so. I am not a Leo but I would think that when a Officer approaches any one they would automatically assume the person could be carrying.

The reason I posted this question for Leo's is because I was remembering the day I was getting fingerprinted for my permit 22 years ago; the young officer taking my fingerprint said "I don't know why anybody would want to carry a gun". I had at least a half a dozen smart ass answers but didn't say anything. I was wondering if most of today's Leo's are glad the law abiding citizens are carrying or would they rather not have citizens carrying. Does one or the other make them feel safer performing their duties? BTW, a heartfelt thank you for all the crap you put up with serving and protecting during your career. One of the coolest things I've ever done was to go on a ride along with a friend of mine who is a HELENA PD officer. I would highly recommend to anyone who has never done that to contact your local police department and ask if you can do a ride along it will really open your eyes.

:shakehead: No Tinman, it is not required by law in Georgia.

Also, attending a Georgia Law presentation given by an Atlanta LEO, he said it's better to not mention a gun at all if you are pulled over. Keep you hands where they are easily seen, do as you are told, no more, no less, and keep it business like. He said telling the LEO you have a gun only sets them on edge unnecessarily.

I think it would be a good idea to find out, this is the kind of stuff that was covered in the Illinois required class for a carry license.
