US Marines replacing existing sniper rifles

Well it seems the old M40 (Remington Model 40X .308 cal) is being replaced by a the Mark 13 Mod 7 rifle (.300 Winchester Magnum), originally used by Navy SEALs. I remember the M40 being used in Vietnam.

Here's the really crazy part - The Marines plan to purchase [346] Mark 13 Mod 7 rifles for $4.3 million. If my math is correct that's $12,427.75 per rifle. That's ridiculous! I don't know how much they got the M40's for but the new cost is simply STUPID! I don't ever use that word because of the implication of its meaning. Here it applies!

I believe in providing our Marines with the best equipment, but that's just wrong! And guess what, we get to pay for them! Well hell, there goes my NRA money....

I saw that...I think it was in American Rifleman? I thought that seemed a little high per unit but give the snipers what they need.

I see the new rifles will be chambered for .300 Winchester Magnum? That was interesting.

If our boys in uniform want them, need them; give it to them. That only amounts to about a nickel for each taxpayer in this country for the rifles. When our boys put themselves in harms way for my freedom I'll give them anything they want.

The rifle is only one component of these Govt. purchases - can include parts and accessories, tools and supplies, crates and cases, training & familiarization mat'l, documentation, and on and on... Takes a lot to field a weapon system.

It may be a little on the high side but if the government wants to spend my money on the military I have no problem with it. Obama was gutting it. Plus our government loves to waste money on Bullshit all the time . At least spending it on the military it has a chance of benefitting our country and our freedom. It is better spent than the the give away program of smart phones to welfare recipients so they can do resumes for employment baa haa!

And it's just that sort of thinking that results in trillion dollar budget deficits.

I would like to ad they make every sniper rifle custom to fit the sniper it is being issued to. I do not know if the barrels are the same for all the snipers . I do know the stocks are custom fit for each individual.
