Help picking a rifle

Good morning all. I am looking at dipping my toe in hunting. Living in Colorado we have access amazing hunting with many animals and seasons. Deer and elk interest me the most. I have NO clue when it comes to long guns. Research has shown me Colorado has minimum caliber, bullet weight, and bullet energy regulations. Big game requires at least a .24 caliber cartridge which generates at least 1000 ft-lbs energy at 100 yards. Minimum bullet weight requirements are 70 grains for antelope, bear, and deer; and 85 grains for elk and moose.
I am not looking to break the bank, but do want something that will last.
Thoughts???

Slanted, define "don't break the bank?"
I'm no expert but several probably be fine. 30.06, .308, .270win.

Kimber Longmaster Classic .308
$6-700 is where I'd like to stay.

I don’t have a Browning Rifle just a BPS shotgun but it seems to me you really can’t go wrong with one. I agree with 2sharp2 .270, .308 30.06.

Mmmm ok, I consider the Kimber Hunter entry level rifle with synthetic stock in .308 has MSRP $945.00.
I also agree with JC Browning rifles seem nice, I also have a BPS Browning shotgun.

Look at the Henry Long Ranger rifles that I believe will fit your needs and with the typical discounts probably fit your budget (under $1,000). You will want to add a scope, of course. Given the spec's required to comply with your state's reg's, you most likely will find a good shooter for much less. I have the Long Ranger in .243 and it shoots straight out to the distances you need. They also come in .308 caliber. Good luck on your search and let us know what you end up getting.

I have to agree. A 30.06 is the way to go, bulletweights from 50 grain accelerator rounds for small game to 150, 165, and over 200 grain for larger dangerous game with one rifle. It does it all.

Being from CNY originally I'll toss the Remington model 700 out there as an option to look at. You can find them chambered in any of the calibers you're considering in a variety of configurations. They can be found on GunBroker for around the price you're thinking. I don't recall the models but Remington also offered semi auto and pump centerfire rifles in popular calibers.
Off the cuff do you envision yourself stalking anything in particular? That would help with the caliber recommendation.
