1911 fever

Well in spite of my love affair with Kimber, after a trip to a nearby gun show (a waste of $7.00), I hit a large LGS in Greenville, NC where they had a ton of 1911s.

After much discussion, handling of many Kimber, Springfield’s, Sigs, Colts and S&W of all sizes, I found the perfect fit and feel for me — a Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commander in 45 ACP. I also got a price I couldn’t refuse. It will fit a carry niche between my Micro 9 and 5” Stainless Kimber.

Tomorrow will be a range day, with a few hundred rounds of 230 gr. round nose of various manufacturers. If all goes well, i’ll try some carry ammo.

Nice looking pistol. I like 1911's. The design is over 100 years old but people today are still copying them because of this design. John Moses Browning was a smart man. I can also lay claim to the fact he worked and lived here in my home town of Ogden, Utah. The Browning museum here is still fun to visit.

Congratulations on the new pistol. I'm a fan of the PRO/Commander size, just right.
One of my favorite YouTube gun guys is Gunblue490. He's a Ruger armorer and has a detailed disassembly video on Ruger 1911s as well as many other topics. Check him out if you get a chance.

Congrats on the scoop.

I haven't had one of those apart. The most important thing to me on the late model 1911s (of any size) is the update of a ramped barrel.

Does your pistol have one?

No, but they put a titanium feed ramp in the frame.

Have a picture of the titanium feed ramp insert in the frame attached below for the curious. I wouldn't have noticed it, but Hickock45 highlighted it in his video. Sorry for the picture quality, what look like marks on it are actually just bad phone photography and lighting. It actually looks like a mirror...and works.

Shot it for the first time this morning and put more than 115 rounds through it with only one failure to feed. That was a "no-name" 8 round magazine I've had for a long time. The two Ruger mags it shipped with and KimPro worked fine.

It fits my hand, feels good to shoot and shoots very accurately. The target picture is at 10 yards and was paper plate #3. It also has 28 holes from my Kimber Micro9....no issues with it either.

I'm a happy camper with everything cleaned, inspected, lubed and ready for the next trip! Heck I'm 70 and this stuff still makes me feel good.
