Holster Porn: NSFW!

Nineteen weeks. That's how long it took to get this. Milt Sparks is not known for speedy delivery. BUT... I think they're the finest holsters out there. I'm also impressed by their philosophy that they only make holsters that they think are appropriate for the intended purpose--they don't bow to fads. That's why I let them steer me toward this Bruce Nelson design, rather than a conventional pancake-style. They say I'll like it better.

I've not worn the holster yet, as it just arrived in the mail today. The timing is spot on, as the seasons are changing and soon my evening attire will be shifting from shorts to big boy pants.

The leather is beautiful, the stitching is beautiful, the fit is beautiful, the decorative leatherwork is beautiful. I'm really excited to wear this.

That’s a beautiful holster and a design I’m not familiar with. I use Milt Sparks almost exclusively now and often wear my pancake holster but I have to wear a cover shirt in some situations. Please let us know your thoughts on this once you’ve worn it a while.

Very nice, but I don't have the patience to wait that long for holster.

Very nice rig indeed.

I've got two from Uncle Milty myself and consider them to be the best of the best. The wait has always been well worth it and soon forgotten after receipt.

I've now had a chance to wear the BN55 a bit, and to form an initial impression. At first, it was disconcerting. An IWB holster is easy to feel pressing up against your side (or crushing your hips). A regular pancake is more comfortable, but still easy to feel on your side. For the first couple outings, this holster really felt as if it was hanging out in space for all to see. But it's not. And although the grip is tilted into my side, it doesn't feel like it. The butt is still tucked in, and barely visible under sensible clothing.

The first disappointment is that my 1 1/2" fabric tactical belt would barely fit through the tunnel of the holster. But then again, Milt Sparks says that some belts won't fit, and if you want a guaranteed perfect fit, to buy their belt. It's loosening up over time, though. Interestingly, no matter what size belt you're wearing, the holster does NOT easily slide around. You need to consciously adjust everything to make it perfect, and the holster will not move after you set it up. Right now I like to wear this holster straddling the side belt loop. I could wear it immediately in front of that loop, but exactly to the side feels better to me. I don't really like to carry guns on my back.

Is this style BETTER than a paddle holster? Hard to say. It's not as wide, which is probably a good thing. I've bought a lot of holsters that I've ended up not using for one reason or another, but I think the Milt Sparks BN55 is going to be one of those that sees use and will probably be in my possession decades from now.
