? for you AR guys

I think most of you know that I don't own and have never shot an AR15. My son has a couple of them and he has a birthday coming up next month. I was thinking about getting him a .22 conversion kit but don't knowing anything about them. He has 4 kids and when it's time for him to hit the range they can go through a mortgage payment worth of ammo in an afternoon.

So, if they do work is there anything I should look for or avoid, would you recommend any particular brand? Is there anything else he would need besides the conversion kit?

How about a nice Smith M&P 15-22 AR? If you shop around you can get one for around $350 with a 4x Scope.

He lives in Michigan and I'm in Illinois, I'd like to avoid going through a firearm transfer.

I don't know anything about conversion kits for AR's, Chuck. But the underlying problem is evident: You don't own an AR. It's an easy problem to fix.

I have a safe full of rifles from .22 to .338 mag that haven't been shot in over 20 years. Why, no place within a 2 hour drive to shoot them. Yes I can shoot anything I have up to and including my 30-06 at an indoor range but 25 yards, give me a break.

Chuck, I don't know about a conversion kit. Several .22lr AR rifles available.

As already suggested I would buy a S&W M&P 15-22. Seen prices real low during Christmas, normally under 400 bills all day long.

Can you pay for the gun and have it shipped to your son ? I don’t know the laws there, but here you don’t have to do a transfer for a long gun with a private sale.

It’s hard to beat some of S&W 22 prices.

I'd skip the conversion kits and get a AR style platform rimfire rife. S&W M&P 15-22 is an excellent choice. I've had one since they first came out a decade ago and put tens of thousands of rounds though it. If you or your family has a hangup about plastic, CMMG is an excellent option. I purchased a CMMG dedicated upper.

S&W is light weight which can be good for kids. CMMG is kinda pricey but is an AR platform compatible with AR lowers.
