Weapon Hunter

Has anybody ever watched "The Weapon Hunter" on the Smithsonian Channel? I watched a rerun yesterday of his search for the best sniper rifle of WWII. He tested rifles from Germany, Russia, England and the United States. He believed that the M1 Garand was the best sniper rifle of the era, although others believed that it was the Springfield.

I am assuming the Springfield and the Garand were both .30-06
They could give some credit to the cartridge as well as the rifles.

I think that the .30-06 is an outstanding cartridge, but I have also had a good experience with the Winchester .308. I thought that all of the Springfield and M1 Garand rifles that were built before the end of WWII were chambered in .30-06, but I am not certain of this.

The TV show did not mention the cartridges, except for the Russian rifle, which was a semi-automatic that jammed with a failed cartridge case while being test fired. Apparently, it was a common problem with that rifle and cartridge. The "expert" had to use his foot to clear it.

My father qualified as an "Expert" marksman with the Springfield at 1,000 yards using iron sights. Today, we think we are doing well at 1,000 yards using a scope . . .

The Garand is an outstanding weapon, and if you can find an original today, with reasonable tolerances, you have a real collectors piece. And the ping at the end of a clip is distinctive.
