I'm going to comment although I'm not sure that check-mate is the brand of magazine that I had bought a few years ago. The price is about what I paid for a couple of magazines and what helped decide to try them. At @ $30 they were cheaper than the Springfield mags at $50. Neither one of them would feed and the bullet tip would hang on the inside front of the magazine. I couldn't see any reason they wouldn't work except for some reason the follower would just get cock-eyed and hang up. I did buy two composite mags that were even cheaper that actually work quite well. I don't remember where I bought them but on the side it says "Thermold...D.& D. Inc., Wilson, N.C., USA". Pictured is the Springfield and the composite. Not much help but wanted to share my bad experience in trying something new that didn't work for me.

Just remembered where I bought the Thermold magazines in case you are interested...Cheaper than Dirt $14.60

I've owned a M1A for about 6 or 7 years now and I basically use new GI mags when I can find them. I've never seen any difference in function between the cheaper GI mags and ones costing twice as much. JMHO.

Took me a while to find my notes.
I've been wanting a M1A for a long time, when I get cash saved up I keep spending it on pistols, but that's another story. Anyway in preparing for my purchase and researching which model M1A I wanted I ran across recommendations for M1A magazines.
Best 20 & 25 round: The company you listed Checkmate Industries.

Or: U S Tactical Supply, Albany OR.
X Mags- round 50 round drum magazine.

"W" Marked 20 round mags from CDNN Sports.

Charley's Surplus for Magazine Pouches and Slings.

To be honest and fair I have not purchased any M1A items from any of these places because have not bought my M1A yet. I have bought some other items from CDNN Sports with good results.

I have not picked up any extras yet. I have been researching in my spare time. I am not in a huge hurry just yet either. My local indoor range will not let me shoot it there. Said others complain cause it's too loud. We all know what it means when something is too loud so I have to wait for our ill tempered weather gets better to head outdoors. Thank you for all the places to check out!

Be sure and let us know how the magazines work out when you buy them. Looks like several of us would like to save a few bucks as an alternative to $50 Springfield for a steel magazine that works as well.

I finally got around to ordering the checkmate mags. Ordered them from midway USA and they showed up yesterday. I am hoping to get out this weekend and try them out.

I actually had Checkmate mags for when I had my M1A SOCOM II and they worked fine. I also kind of remember that Springfields mags are made by Checkmate...

I thought I had read that before too. They look to be of the same quality so I don't anticipate any issues.
