Most of you know I bought a Sig P238 .380 today. Never had a .380 before, this gun has a 2.7" barrel. What is the preferred load for these guns? I usually prefer heavier bullets in my handguns as opposed to lighter and faster but this is a new ball game for me, what's the way to go with these little guns?

Nice try Steve, I'm a big advocate of Google but it can't tell me what the experienced members of our little group have determined through trial and error.
Just repeating your learned advice! I'll bet there are more Sig P238 owner reviews and .380 ammo recommendations there then there is here!

I have used several different loads in my .380's. My LCP likes 95 grn jacketed hollow points. Most .380 ammo is between 80 and 95 grain so there really isn't a big spread in weight. There is some 70 grain stuff and some 100/102 but they are rare.

I shoot 95 gain round nose in my 238. Someone mentioned Buffalo Bore and they are absolutely right. Great ammo for your Sig, just expensive, IMO. I do not use hollow points in my pistol for defensive carry. The .380 round does not penetrate very well so why use a round that slows penetration? I load with Buffalo Bore 100 grain +P for defense. Just my opinion, yours may differ.

Thanks Denny, Gmountain is the one that mentioned Buffalo Bore for defensive ammo. This is what I'm looking for, personal opinions from our members. I'll look for some 95 grain to use for range ammo.

I have never had any issues with hollow points in any of my three .380's. But then, I polish the feed ramp of every auto loader I buy as soon as I get it home. I make it part of my cleaning ritual. But, Georgiaboy, maybe you were referring to something other than feeding.

I always make a point of breaking in new guns with FMJ ball ammo, but where do I go from there? I don't know how hollow points perform coming from what's basically a shortened 9mm case.

Ya,I know. I was just trying to give him something to read until a member had an answer. No pleasing him, especially in a Jamisons frame of mind
