First off, I have a concealed carry license. And I always carry. This is in Michigan. We can carry in the airport common areas, just not in the 'sterile' areas.
So, I took Mom to the airport to fly home, parked and went in to help with her bags. She doesn't know I'm carrying. In the past week or so, I've read on Reddit about people informing others about their CCW on purpose or accidentally. And the potential problems/issues it's caused with family or friends. I decided not to tell Mom about it unless she asked during her visit. She can speak without thinking sometimes. She's pro 2A, so that's not a problem. Just didn't want her saying something while we're all out in public. She recently had back surgery, so a wheelchair was used from the front baggage check in to the gate. She's not needing the chair, but all the holiday family activities aggravated her back. So we're on our way to the security screening, when the gentleman pushing the chair says he can get me a 'gate pass' so I can go all the way to the gate. I meekly said "I can't." I must have mumbled, had to say it again, "I can not." Mom's looking up at us, I'm praying she doesn't insist her son go to the gate. Cold chills... Neither one of them asked why I couldn't go to the gate. All was good. But THAT was something I had not anticipated as a possibility while carrying. A freak'in gate pass! Got the hugging, and bending over stuff figured out. No way was I going near the screening area.
