For three years my Ultra Carry II performed flawlessly... other than several FTE's that only happen when I'm shooting Wolf or S&B 230FMJ at the range and when I saw that it was time to change the recoil springs (used wolf std tension).
But the last 3 trips to the range has given me cause to wonder if I should continue to carry my Kimber. 1st time after flawless range use of 150 rounds of the Wolf FMJ, I get home and field strip the gun and I find the guide rod is loose in the head plate. I tighten it clean it check it and move along. Next range trip.... same thing happened 100 rounds at the range, strip and clean, guide rod loose again! But the 3rd time (last Sunday) I was shooting and not quite 100 rounds in... a Range Officer grabs my shoulder and said firm but polite "Stop and make safe your firearm" I eject the magazine and pull the slide back to eject the chambered round and whoa.... that did not feel right! The range officer hands me my guide rod and said "that came off your gun and landed behind you... at my feet!" I am at first stunned.. then annoyed... and now .... not trusting my much loved, carried every day, UC2. Today I called Kimber CS and spoke to a guy... and he said "use some blue or red loctite" If it gives you any more problems .... call us back! So.... I'm asking all you UC2 users... This ever happen to you? Loctite cure it? What else did you do? Thanks.

Isn't the Wilson combat replacement a 1 piece rod?

see the flat spring kit.

Sorry for your problem. I'm sure it's fixable.

I'd clean the parts good and use loctite #271 (red) on it. The different colors of loctite denote their holding strength.

Almost forgot, welcome to the forum from northern Illinois.

Welcome to the site from Tennessee! Glad everyone is OK. I bet a guide rod to the forehead would hurt like crap!

Welcome to the forum from St.Lou.

I have been searching the gun sites for an hour and not one have had reports of this happening.
Explain to me where the rod would have the room to come out.
Front/Back???

Somewhere on this forum someone else had a case of the guide rod sticking out of the front after the slide cycled. It had come unscrewed from the base of the guide rod. It didn't come all the way out but would have. The only way it could come out would be out the front. I don't have an ultra but I assume they still have the base that rests against the barrel link. Even without that, the barrel link would keep the rod from coming out of the ejection port. The guide rod would probably be too long to come out of the ejection port anyway.

As others have said, Loctite on the threads should take care of it.

I found it by searching this site for "guide rod" and found the thread. It is called "guide Rod Issues".....here is the key post:

I got it figured out. Disassembled it when got home and to my surprise the recoil spring rod unscrewed from the head guide. I brought it to my local shop where it was purchased and they went thru everything. We put some Loctite on the rod and head assembly and hopefully my baby is good to go. Gonna let it setup for a day and tear it down to clean. I think i'm going to snoop on Wilson Combat for an upgrade if possible. Thanks for the concern guys!

Love my Kimber

I love my kimber, but I will probably take the next 5 kimbers I buy out of the box, take them out of the bag... and install a WC flat spring kit.

Thanks!

Thank you everyone for the welcome. Well the spring assembly is sitting on my dresser waiting for the 24 hour cure time to over before I reassemble my UC2... I should have taken a pic for you all! I better read up on how to post pics to the forum!
I did a little look see at Wilson's web site (thanks for the suggestion) but I don't believe that they make a spring kit for the 3" Kimber... at least I didn't see one.
Anyway, I will be hitting the range this weekend (or maybe weekend after) and I shall report back here the results!
Oh and by the way.... the rod came out of the front of the gun and the action of the slide cycle is what caused it to flip out and behind me.
When I figure out how to post pics I'll show you a the newly modified with loctite rod and my UC2.... along with the idiot scratch from when I reassembled it for the first time! ha!

That's what I thought...yours is a 3"..I'm surprised you even messed with that little dual spring beast changing inner/outer springs and such. I'm sure it will work out for you with the red loctite but a complete captured replacement is 45 bucks from kimber.

$45.00 isn't too bad for the entire assembly. The spring kit from Wolff, which also included the firing pin spring was only $8.99 and with a little help from YouTube wasn't to hard to replace. YouTube guy didn't mention loctite. But I'm not sure that was it as I changed the springs last summer. This problem started a month ago. But next time? I might go for the $45.00 assembly. Probably a more prudent replacement option!
Thanks for the info!

You bet! When you mentioned possibly shelving your EDC pistol I wanted to give you the option of "starting from scratch". Also, are you using the composite tool to remove that rod/spring assembly? If not, it will make stripping your 3" a breeze...and they are cheap.

Good Luck

Hey Ya'll!

Welcome to the forum from beautiful downtown Monroe, Georgia!!!

Take my word for it, if Kimber Customer Service says that the Loctite will cure the guide rod problem, you can pretty much bet on it working out!!! Those folks are good!! I have used it on a number of gun related screws. Never had one come loose again. I have faith is the stuff!!:D:D

As for your "idiot scratch", well there is a cure for that too!! Either of these will work to hide your "misdeed"!!:eek: Make sure that you remove the oil from the area before applying and then wipe it down with oil after it dries.

I looked on the Wilson Combat site too. I was wondering if there was a one-piece guide rod for an ultra. But to no avail. I could not identify any springs, rods or kits for the Ultra. I have the Wilson flat spring kit in my Pro Carry and love it.

Oh well. This thread reminded me that I should change out my firing pin spring in my Pro. It has 2000 rounds on it. I didn't change it when I changed the recoil spring at 800 rounds.
