After many years away from firearms (ex-military) I decided to take up shooting. Started with the .22 moving up to the 9mm and am now interested in a 1911.
Kimber is going to be a definite consideration. Looking forward to gleaning some knowledge before I lay out anymore hard earned money.

Welcome to the forum from Northern Illinois mydogmax. What kind of a 1911 are you interested in, just something for the range or a carry gun?

Hello and welcome. Patiently doing some research is what I do. These things can get pretty pricey. I usually zero in on something, then sleep on it. Just to make sure it's not an impulse buy. A grand is a grand! Besides all the usual online places, here's a site that might help with your research. http://www.genitron.com/ I just found it and it's kinda neat doing the comparisons. Check back in, to share your research/thoughts. Stay warm...

Thanks for the welcome. As I am now on my computer, and not my ipad, I can be a little bit more concise about my wants and needs. First, a little background. I am an (older) ex-marine and Viet Nam veteran. One of thousands and not a big deal. Just thought I'd mention it because most of the people I know don't even know I spent time in the military. It appears that the gun owners appreciate it a bit more and a lot of them are ex-military. During boot camp I qualified with the M-14 and shot the 1911 just for familiarization. Just one mag. I then re-qualified with the M-14 while over in Okinawa just before leaving for Viet Nam.
I haven't picked up a gun since leaving the military in 1967. For some reason, last year, I decided to take up shooting again. Bought a M&P22 because I thought it was a good way to re-train myself regarding stance, grip etc. Fun gun and cheap to shoot. I now have an M&P9 on order and am looking forward to moving up to a larger caliber. However, I am now starting to drool over the 1911's. Beautiful guns but there's a huge amount to choose from. After sifting through a number of forums I've come to believe that the most popular are (excluding the very expensive ones) Kimber, Smith & Wesson and Springfield. All around the $1000 range (give or take). I've held the S&W E series. Pretty gun and about $1000 at Buds discount guns. Not sure if I want a full sized 1911. Maybe a 4"barrel would suit me better. I've been searching the YouTube videos and watching them. Also looking through Buds guns I found the Kimber pro raptor ll. Could get this for a little over $900. My uses would be for HD and range use. Don't plan to carry. How does this gun stack up to others. I know my questions are very general but I'm still in the discovery phase. Sorry for the long post. In the future they'll be no need to give my complete history. Just some rookie questions.

First and foremost. Thank You and Welcome Home. Second, welcome to the group.
I think you'll find the modern 1911 is a long way from the 1940's built, Marine/Military issue 45's. They are much more precisely built with much closer tolerances. Many things that were once considered on the cutting edge of custom are now common place. Things like extended beavertails, extended slide and safety releases, fitted barrels, fluted barrels. the list goes on and on. Do your research, find a shop that rents guns or friends that have guns like you are interested in and shoot the heck out of them.

Hey Ya'll!

First and foremost, welcome home, Marine!! Second, thanks for your service. Now, down to business: Welcome to the forum from beautiful downtown Monroe, Georgia!!!
;););)

I did a bunch of research and investigating before I bought my Kimber Custom Stainless II. It is everything that I wanted and more. I have fed this thing thousands of rounds of hardball and premium self defense ammo. It just eats it up like it's going out of style. I've had it for over 7 years with no problems at all. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't think twice about buying another.

Welcome from a fellow Minnesotan! I am new to the 1911 and Kimber. I always wanted a 1911 and found a deal on a new Kimber. I've only gotten to shoot it once but both my wife and I really enjoyed it.:)

Welcome from Georgia. I dont post often but have seen a trend that bothers me. Ill start a thread on later today on that....

Anyway, when doing your research, if you hear anything negative about a Kimber make sure you ask if they read the owners manual and went through the proper break in procedure. I've read more than a few complaints from people who haven't been through the first few hundred rounds. Some never even cleaned it properly nor used the right ammo.
