So I picked up a silver KDS9c from MiidwayUSA on their current sale.
With tax, background fee and transfer fees I paid a total of $1165.00.
I intend to use this as a carry gun primarily.
This is the first Kimber for me. I have many 1911's and started out with a Series 70 Colt Gold Cup in 1992 as the first gun I bought for myself.
I immediatly took it into the range at the store I transferred it through and put 200 Norma 124 gr fmj's and 30 Gold Dot 124 gr +P's through it pretty much without a hitch.
The very first round, I pulled on the slide and let it go and the slide stopped about an eighth of an inch back.
I thought uh oh.... I then locked the slide back, and used the slide stop to relase it and everything from then on was smooth sailing.
The gun was quite accurate in my casual shooting for the day. It seems like it would keep up easily with my HK VP9sk (which is pretty damn accurate) and is likely to hang in there with my Cajunized CZ Shadow 2. More formal testing will need to be gone, this was just an initial shake down.
The gun is not super snappy, less so than the HK VP9SK.
It is very comfortable in the hand for me, and I guess I would say it is very smooth which a lot of reviews complain about.
Compared to my Ed Brown Kobra Carry, the feels very similar. The butt of the Kimber has a similar shape to the Ed Brown Bobtail, which I like.
I have smooth thick Kim Ehrends grips on my Ed Brown, and overall the feel in the hand is very similar (a good thing to me).
I never thought the Ed Brown Kobra texture was very agressive at all compared to the checkering on my other 1911's or even the CZ Shadow 2, but I don't hate it.
Overall the Kimber has left me extremely pleased overall. The finish and color is excellent. I like the feel in the hand and it doesn't grate my love handles when carrying it (for a limited amount of time so far).
It fits well in all my Commander holsters.
My negative thoughts so far...
The slide isn't super tight. It had just noticable wiggle if you grab it and test for it, but it's not bad. I am spoiled by 1911's built and modified by Wilson Combat and Ed Brown, and didn't expect it to match them.
My other nit pick is how UGLY the rear sight looks from the side. Come on !
The sight picture when shooting is awesome. The serated rear blade it GREAT, but from the side it is far too homely for such an otherwise handsome gun !
Even the night sights on the railed version are a slight improvement.
I plan to mount a Holosun 507C to at least try out. The plate and a pair of 18 round mags are due to arrive from Kimber tomorrow.
More to follow...
