I have a new 1911 Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II, 3 " Barrel (.45 Cal),
and love it.

Have fired around 150 trouble free accurate rounds through it.

While cleaning the barrel, I noticed that the chamber part of the barrel is somewhat darkened, and so far, I have not been able to remove this discoloration.

I'm wondering if this area of the barrel is discolored as the result of heat, and will not clean as nicely as the front part of the barrel.

Is this type of discoloration normal?

First, welcome to the forum from Ohio! I've never had a problem getting my guns clean. I use Hoppes #9 with a proper brush with great results. What are you using and how are you cleaning it?

So far I have used Hoppes # 9 with a .45 cal brush; used breakfree (CLP) and let sit overnight with a wet patch; then Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber with a brush.

I don't want to over scrub the area, but it seems that no matter what I do, that area looks as if it was burned.

The shells chamber just fine, but I like to keep things clean and this is bothering me.

First thanks for welcoming me as a new member, and for responding to me so quickly. I'm still finding my way around the Forum. I'll take a picture and try to figure out how to post it.

Welcome to the forum from StLou.
This is what I use for cleaning my barrel and any nickle plated or stainless firearm.
It's like a cheesecloth/shammy material and just cut a square off and rub and watch the carbon fade away before your eyes.
I get it at lgs for $6.00.
DO NOT USE IT ON BLUED BARRELS...

Good luck and enjoy the forum..

Welcome Sam. Are you talking about the bottom of the barrel between the ramp and the barrel link? On my Pro Carry II, that part of the barrel isn't a bright finish. It is matte and looks like a flat gray color and it is the only part of the barrel where the residue doesn't easily wipe off. Not including my hands. If that is the case, I think Jeff's (jms-stlou) cloth would do the trick. I use a wire brush that came with a gun cleaning kit on that part. The wire isn't very stiff but it helps cut that dark residue.

Welcome to the forum from northern Illinois Sam D, that barrel discoloration you're seeing is normal, it's nothing to worry about.
