OK, I'm not trying to promote another site, but since this site is fairly new (and more friendly, I might add) I thought I'd post a link to some good information and start a thread that could be used for posting Problem/Cause/Fix information.

Best format seems to be:

Thanks for posting Gator. 16 pages is a lot of reading and I'm sure several repeats as it covers some8+ years. But, I'm guessing most anything we happen across has been addressed there.

Yep, I agree. I read through most of it and it seems to me the most common symptoms had to do with FTF or FTE.

The most common problems causing these symptoms were:

1. Extractor (affected FTF and FTE)

2. Feed ramp - a good clean/polish seem to work wonders for some.

3. OEM mags 'appeared' to be less reliable than aftermarket, i.e. Wilson Combat or any other skirted.

Oddly enough some of the folk who addressed multiple points of trouble, found that after cleaning/polishing the feed ramp, the mags weren't as critical an issue.

I was surprised to read that a poorly tuned extractor can actually cause FTF, not just FTE.

Anyway, most of it was a pretty good read and most issues were easily addressed.

That's why I bought a Kimber thousands of rounds and not a problem!!

Not all, but most. Some were repetitive or just short commentary that I'd skip over. I was having an OCD moment. Sometimes my male 'tinker gene' gets out of hand. and I just have to know what make this thing tick.

Part-on-part wear while firing is the only way to ensure a unique, customer fit. That takes time and ammo.

I was naive and ignorant about 1911s when I purchased my Kimber. When I had 5 FTF in my first 100 rounds I was concerned there was something wrong with the gun. It now shoots flawlessly. Perhaps manufacturers or LGS should put a bright label in 1911 cases that read, "Be prepared to shoot 500+ rounds to ensure proper operation." At least that may spark some conversation from the prospective buyer.

I would say it is an over-simplification to say 1911. Not all 1911's are as tightly fitted as the Kimbers. Next time you're in a gun shop ask to see a more common model, Colt, Smith, Ruger, RI any of them. While you're looking at it, shake it.
Then go home and shake your Kimber.
