What if:

You're home alone one night sound asleep in bed, the house is secure when suddenly a strange sound awakens you. All houses make noise especially when the weather changes but this was a noise you've never heard before. A quick look at the clock tells you it's 2:30AM, you listen for a minute but you don't hear anything else, now what do you do?

Do you go to the bathroom as Steve suggested?
Do you go back to sleep?
Do you turn on the lights and look around the house?
Do you take a flashlight and look around the house?
Do you take a gun, turn on the lights and look around the house?
Do you take a gun and a flashlight and look around the house?
Do you call the police?
What do you do?

Ok, seriously. My house isn't real big, so I would get up, not turn any lights on, grab my handgun and flashlight and do a walk around. My outside lights are all motion detector controlled and I have had them all come on in the middle of the night. It's usually a critter.

I've also got motion sensor lights on my house but it's so damn windy in this state that it's not unusual for them to go off a couple of times a night on a real windy day.

I get that too if the wind is from the right direction. I've also got a Jack Russell alarm system. She doesn't miss much!

But seriously.I live in a very rural area with a lot of critters walking, crawling around at night. They normally set off the outdoor lights. But we also seem to have an inordinate amount of "methheads"in this county,so it pays to at least give everything a cursory check.Although we have a very good Sheriffs Dept.,they are too few and far between to rely solely on them.

I've also got two independent security contractors, 45 lb Border Collie and an 85 lb Lab. The Lab will invite you in to sit in my recliner and drink my best bourbon but that 45 lb Border Collie has got 75 lbs of fight in him.

And they're both sitting on either side of me waiting to go out so I guess it's time to pull the plug.

I check on the security pad next to my bed to see which zone in the house has been breached. If there is one,911 has already been notified by house security.I go into safe room adjacent to master closet and wait for the police to get there...{P.S....I always have a bottle of Johnny{Walker} in the safe room so I guess I'm having a swig...Don't want to be too hooched up when Johnny Law gets there since it's a felony in Missouri to be intoxicated with a loaded weapon}...How's that??...

Now, I'm assuming when you say alone, it means no one is home, including the dogs and cats. I know what it sounds like around here, so a strange noise means I grab a flashlight and handgun. Go to the door frame and wait a sec for my eyes and ears to acclimate. If it involved breaking glass, then the cops would get called. Footsteps and it's 911 time. Other than that, I would take a look around the house.

Yep. I look at the face of one or more of my 4 boxers. If they aren't concerned, I'm not concerned.

At that time of the morning....

The alarm system will be on, so any open door/window will cause a helluva lot of noise.

Bedroom door is closed and locked.

Flashlight is on night stand next to me (and sweetie's too.)

Pistola is in one of two places ... a drawer or still in my holster attached to my pants laying on the floor next to the bed. I have a long-time habit of leaving all my daily stuff in my pants at night and laying them within easy reach on the floor at night. If something happens I can be suited up and ready to go very quickly.

Then I'd wait, listening for additional sounds. If none, then I slowly move through the house, turning on lights as I go, with flashlight and gun in hand.

That's the plan, anyway.

If my Dingo doesn't respond then all is safe. He makes a lot of noise but you would find Him under the bed if something where to happen
