No Kimber enthusiast without an EVO

1009 Views 31 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Bobk22
I finally put my Solo away after I tried my new EVO. If you are a Kimber enthusiast, you should try at least an EVO. This gun can not be compared to any other kimber. I am a big fan of the micro 9. I own 3 of them plus my Solo. But this one, the EVO, any Kimber lover should own one. This gun has has it all for a competitive price. Go Kimber. We want more like this.

I thought it was discontinued.
I thought it was discontinued.
There are still a bunch of brand new out there. Amazing firearm. By the way, Kimber always discontinue one gun to come up with an other one. The SOLO for the EVO, and then the EVO for the MARKO or whatever we call that plastic thing.

I think I can safely say I’m a big Kimber fan BUT I am NOT buying a EVO. Not it’s bad I don’t like it’s style. I have Ultra‘s in 9mm that can do the same job.

I truly respect your opinion in that matter. But i would like to hear your opinion again after a shooting experience.

I would shoot a EVO but don’t have one available. However I doubt that shooting one would change my mind.
I‘ve shot a Glock before and never bought one of those either.

...I had several glocks, sold them all... I have looked at a Kimber Solo and EVO, but went with the Kimber Ultra, Pro, etc... I recommend yougo to your LGS that has an indoor range and try a Kimber Ultra; it is a 1911, it shoots way better than I do, and it is highly recommended...

Specialization is a beautiful thing, diversity may be interesting but ultimately leads to mediocrity. The EVO may be a great gun, and I'm glad you like yours. But Kimber didn't need it or any other striker-fired blasters, or revolvers or tupperware pistols either for that matter. I'm sure they're mostly fine, quality guns, but they'd be better off devoting that manufacturing money, space and personnel to giving the treatment their vaunted warranty center does to each defective pistol that comes back to the mothership to be made how it should have been in the first place to every single pistol before it leaves the factory. Fewer new customers are being drawn to the brand because they don't just make 1911's than are being driven away by all the stories of $1000+ dollar guns that choke out of the box and have to go back for something stupid like a polish on the feed ramp...

I would like to shoot an EVO but I doubt I would buy one. Reviews around here have been very good. I'm not sure why its being discontinued but I'm guess sales are down because of a very crowded market of micro pistols.

Never seen an EVO at the range. Kimber probably flushed it from the lineup because it wasn’t selling. As 2Sharp2 earlier mentioned, the EVO probably reminded potential buyers of the Solo.

I'm wondering if they could be dropping the EVO in order to free up machinery for the new KDS9c. I'm guessing there's going to be a huge demand for that gun.

Amen, brother. I wish Kimber would stick to their knitting and get back to making 1911's that match the quality and value they used to be known for in that category. They have a dizzying variety of guns for such a small company. That may be part of the problem.

If the OP likes the EVO, I say shoot it and don't worry about who agrees or not. Not my cup of tea for a small carry gun but to each his own taste.

Kimber isn't a small company.
They are the largest producer of 1911s in the US.
They sell more 1911s than Colt or Springfield.

I think that may have once been true - maybe ten years ago. Not sure it still is.

Kimber is an SMB by corporate standards. Barely reaching mid-market status. Approx 300 employees and being privately owned they don't publish financial statements but they are estimated to be a 80 to 100M company. Springfield is not a huge company either but it's twice the size of Kimber re: employees and revenue. FN is also twice the size of Kimber. Sig, Ruger, Taurus, S&W, CZ/Colt, sell 1911s and size wise it's not even close.

My guess is the biggest makers of 1911s volume-wise anywhere are probably Rock Island and the Turks. Tisas and Girsan for example. But they aren't USA of course. Since nobody reports how many 1911s they make I question Kimber's claim to #1. The best marketing bullshit is that which cannot be proven or disproven.

I'd love to know how many 1911's they sold vs. their other guns.

We have already had this conversation.
None of those US companies sell more 1911s than Kimber.
Colt went BK a few years back, and needed a Czech company to bail them out, because sales over the last decade were so terrible.
FN doesn't make 1911s, 1911s are a small fraction of Ruger and SWs line up, Taurus barely makes any 1911s (none of which function reliably), and Springfield is a 245 year old company that apparently still hasn't figured out how to make a decent 1911 trigger.
They are all in on XDs Hellcats and fudds buying M1A variants.

RIA/Armscor probably makes more 1911s than anyone, but they aren't in the US and they make 1911 frames and parts for a shitload of other brands (ATI, Iver Johnson, etc).

I stand corrected on FN - I was thinking Hi Power. Not relevant to this subject. Even so, they are twice the size of Kimber.

I would like to see proof of those Kimber numbers. I dont buy their claim. I figure they know that it's impossible to disprove their claim.

Springfield Armory is not the maker of muskets. They just bought the name. Founded in 1974, which only seems like 245 years ago. I didn't mention the Spanish 1911's. Astra, Star, Llama. You don't see them much in the US but they have sold a lot of them.

The best thing to happen to Colt was to be acquired by a company that has their shit together. They are making decent 1911s again. I have a Combat Elite and a Gold Cup Trophy both 45's. Four years old now. Tight, reliable, smooth as silk. Mostly range guns for me. I generally don't carry a government or commander sized 1911 for an EDC. Unless I'm out in the woods. And then most of the time it's my G20. A 10mm pistol that always goes bang. :)

Kimber gets credit for breathing new life into the 1911 world back in the day. But like I said I think they have lost their mojo in terms of quality and the 1911 market is heating up once again. It's their game to lose.

Call me cynical. I have never had to send back a Remington, Ruger, Springfield. Rock Island, Smith and Wesson, Colt, Sig, Taurus 1911 for repairs. Not even once. I have been shooting 1911s a long time. At one time or another I owned one or more of those makes. Then there's my ten year old Kimbers. I still have those. Great pistols all of them.

I never said Kimber was as large as FN.

You are probably right, but Kimber is turning a profit. Colt isn't really Colt, Springfield is all in on the Hellcat and XDs when they aren't selling M1A variants, and Ruger, SW don't really even focus on 1911s. They make em..but they are an afterthought.

Are any of them even in business?

Yes, it was. CZ is a fantastic company, and they kept the spirit of Dan Wesson alive when they acquired it. They know how to build a good 1911.
Sadly, rumor has it that they are letting Colt's US management stay in place, so I don't have high hopes.

Kimber has the best fit and finish in their price range of any manufacturer
I'll throw BUL in the mix too, but they aren't made in the US, and anything other than their basic line gets priced up into Dan Wesson territory.

Probably a good thing, because they would still have your gun. :D

Might as well push my puppy into the dogfight! As I usually do when the EVO comes up! We all have our favorites, and I love the 1911!!! But for a small, light carry gun, the EVO is awesome! Very comfortable to carry, very accurate and 100% reliable, from my experience! That said, I carried an Ultra 45 today!!!😁

@bad ninja Read the employee reviews of Kimber in Alabama on Indeed and Glassdoor. Very entertaining.

We can shelf this conversation and revisit it again in a year. I'm sticking with my belief they are in trouble on the manufacturing side. Instead of fixing the problem they hire more ramp polishers for warranty work.

A fish rots from the head down. Bad leaders kill good companies.

A bunch of New Yorkers running a company in rural Alabama led by a real life Gordon Gecko. What could go wrong? :)
