No Kimber enthusiast without an EVO

880 Views 31 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Bobk22
I finally put my Solo away after I tried my new EVO. If you are a Kimber enthusiast, you should try at least an EVO. This gun can not be compared to any other kimber. I am a big fan of the micro 9. I own 3 of them plus my Solo. But this one, the EVO, any Kimber lover should own one. This gun has has it all for a competitive price. Go Kimber. We want more like this.

@bad ninja Read the employee reviews of Kimber in Alabama on Indeed and Glassdoor. Very entertaining.

We can shelf this conversation and revisit it again in a year. I'm sticking with my belief they are in trouble on the manufacturing side. Instead of fixing the problem they hire more ramp polishers for warranty work.

A fish rots from the head down. Bad leaders kill good companies.

A bunch of New Yorkers running a company in rural Alabama led by a real life Gordon Gecko. What could go wrong? :)
Lol.
Well, guess how many people said "A bunch of Aussies starting a gun company in America? Making Rifles, and now they want to make an American Icon like the 1911? They won't last another year."

Yeah I'll take that action.
I'll bet you a Wilson mag they are still running strong in May of 2024.

I'd be salty too, if I made guns all day and couldn't even carry one.
I'll bet there are a lot of former employees that are jaded because they didn't get transferred to the Troy facility, and still have to live in a shit hole like Yonkers.

I dont have a crystal ball. But I got a whiff of smoke with this Camp Guard cluster f__ and I'm still pissed about it. I do hope they get their shit together. Six months, a year, we'll see what happens. I was in packaging and bottling and later warehouse automation. I worked for a couple of smaller companies who were doing great and were then acquired by bigger companies or scum bag investment bankers. Two things happened: 1. Brain drain (all the good people leave) and 2. They close shop and move someplace else where labor is cheap and the new standard becomes mediocrity. Basically what made the company great and a leader in the business disappears.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at Kimber to see and hear what's going on.

Kimber didn't get bought out, and didn't move to try and find cheap labor.
They moved because New York is agressivly attacking gun rights and they were smart enough to get out while they can.😁

I would shoot a EVO but don’t have one available. However I doubt that shooting one would change my mind.
I‘ve shot a Glock before and never bought one of those either.

I'm sure there are a lot of reasons for moving and NY being hostile to firearms is definitely one of them. Something like 40 companies have bailed out of the northeast because of that. There's a reason I am no longer a 'New Englander'. But you can bet that their payroll is less in Troy Alabama than it was in NY and NJ. Also the tax breaks they negotiated. A smart move - if you do it right and can fill the jobs with the talent you need.

Kimber was bought out but it was not related to the move to AL. Twice actually. A guy named Edelman owns Kimber now. He financed the company after they nearly went under for the second time in the early 90s. He partnered with Greg Warne, the son of one of the founders but later muscled him out and took full control.

Other trivia: The Kimber CFO embezzled 10M from the company in 2004. He went to prison.

The new owner and CEO recently bought a 21 million dollar condo in Florida. He's obviously doing well. I don't think he cares if anybody's feed ramp needs polishing. I sure wouldn't. Even if I could only afford a 10 million dollar condo.

I'll bet a cheeseburger and fries Kimber gets acquired by one of the big players in the not too distant future. That may be a good thing. That is the goal of a financier. Pump up the company's sales numbers and sell it.

As a wise man once said, We shall see what we shall see. We have the start now; the developments will follow in time.

I'm over and out on this subject.

We all know the history of Kimber.
They were never bought out of bankruptcy by a large corporation they were sold to new owners. Most people don't buy a losing business, unless it's assets are more than it's debt.
21 million dollar condo.
Sweet!
Still think Kimber is a small business?

They built the new Troy facility.
And yes, I'm sure they have a lower payroll when union thieves aren't stealing a chunk of the workers pay, and crooked NY politicians aren't looking for their pound of flesh.
However, don't kid yourself.
'Bama isn't China.
Skilled labor brings a premium here in the south too, and you can live a helluva lot better on $60k here than you can on $100k in Yonkers.
I'll be looking for that Wilson mag next May.

Love my EVO Raptor, but unfortunately the EVO had too much SOLO baggage to overcome…plus the round capacity didn’t help either.
if this would have been a 10+1 or 12+1 magazine gun it would have lasted…just my two cents. But if I see the price dropping on these I will definitely snag another!

Kimber didn’t ask me… but since they designed an entire new subcompact 9mm anyway, Kimber shoulda made a Solo II that was reliable with all ammo and done a video proving so. IMO, Kimber would have been overwhelmed with demand. Instead, they ran away from a gun that everyone wanted to work.

I never put my oar into the Solo pond. To be honest at the time I never paid much attention to all the drama about it.

I did take in a Kahr MK9 Elite on a trade with a buddy of mine and it soon became one of those guns I will never grow tired of. Mine is identical to this one. I'm too lazy to go to the safe to take a photo right now.
Air gun Trigger Gun barrel Gun accessory Combat pistol shooting

This small pistol is the most well built pocket gun I have ever had. It's all stainless and the machining is remarkable. It was already broken in when I got it. This thing is tight. No MIM parts, beautiful satin stainless finish.

It's a little heavy but I never cared. It's the only Kahr I have owned so I can't say if it is representative of other guns in the Kahr lineup. But when you hold this gun in your hand and when you fire it you can feel the quality.

I have an Evo and it carries very well.
Also have a Mako, it shoots great but it's not as comfortable to carry as the Evo.
Not hearing much about the Mako these days, could it wind up discontinued as well?
So Solo, Evo, and Mako, maybe it's about the "O" on the end.

You should maybe get a better holster.

The Evo probably got the axe due to poor sales because it directly competes with the Micro series pistols ( which are both very popular and has an "O" at the end 😉).

The Solo had one minor problem...it didn't work.

The Mako is reliable, light, small, optic ready, accurate and carries alot of ammo on board.
It's the only polymer framed pistol Kimber makes.
The Mako isn't going anywhere for now.

I just can't get into the baby pistols.
I've carried a 1911 in one form or another since 78 pretty much 24/7. The smallest I'll carry is an Ultra. It still has a decent sight picture and can reach out better than the micro guns.
I once had an old Oklahoma Trooper tell me " It's called concealed carry, not comfortable carry. " Now with better belts and newer holsters, I can't see the reason to carry a pistol that can't reach out and touch someone...just my opinion and we all know what that is. LOL

As a side note. I've carried everything from Remington Rand, Colts etc. I've never had an issue with Kimbers, with the exception of a super carry ultra hd, that once guys like 2 sharp, Bad Ninja and Steve in Allentown, walked me through a 5 minute extractor adjustment and poof she ran like a top.
Never had to use Kimbers CS, but I will say the worst was Colt and Beretta. But that's another story!!
Be safe !!
