So, cleaning my Kimber today, I decided to re-read the owner's manual instructions on cleaning and lubricating. Oddly enough, it didn't mention the firing pin or extractor. The extractor seems to get pretty dirty and plays a pretty critical role as moving parts go.

I cleaned the firing pin and extractor as always, but did not put any oil on them (omg)...since the manual didn't include them in their list of things to lube. So, I feel a bit funny about that. In fact, I feel ashamed. And a little dirty.

I've never taken the frame apart or cleaned the trigger, safety etc. how often should that be done, since it isn't mentioned?

Your best bet is to follow the instructions in your owners manual.

a. Slide and Frame rails - Oil. Do not over oil!
b. Disconnector on top of frame - Small drop.
c. Barrel Hood - two drops, spread on hood.
d. Barrel Locking lugs inside Slide and on Barrel - one drop on each lug.
e. Barrel Link- one drop behind link.
f. Slide Stop pin - one drop, spread with finger.
g. Outside of Barrel - Oil. Do not over oil, spread with fingertip.
h. Cock Hammer - one drop in between the hammer and frame.

I never oil the firing pin or extractor, you don't want the oil to collect dirt in either case. If in doubt call Kimbers customer service and see what they say.

I agree with Chuck, call customer service. They are your best source. Just for grins, Google your question and see what comes up.

Not really metal to metal for the extractor. Not like other parts anyway. If you look closely, you'll see there is a built in tolerance. It's there for the very reason you are concerned about.

I may be mistaken but the extractor doesn't "move" per se. It just has a little springiness built into it. Any amount of oil will fill with carbon/residue and not allow a firm grip. Oil will also get behind it not allowing free movement.

The spent shell just snaps into the ejector. If it has no freedom of movement it will break and or fail to grasp/extract the shell.

Right?

Anyway, I just cleaned my gun (now I'm happy) and I didn't put any oil on the firing pin or extractor. And I'm trying to go very light with the oil overall. Like Brylcream, "A little dab will do you." (Yeah, they still make that stuff. No I don't use it!)

Has X-ray like the video you refer to plus a "game" of order of disassembly. 3D views etc. Super cool app that shows how it all works.

Great for a novice like me.

Yeah, this app will be a good reference. Especially if I decide to disassemble my gun while floating on a cloud.
