That "fatal funnel" you mentioned is what I always worried about in my old house, it works both ways. The dirt bag will pay a price trying to advance up, but you could potentially pay the same price trying to get down. Other than a dirt bag, I also thought of a fire. That is something I considered when I purchased this house. The ranch house I now have has 3 doors leading outside and 4 rooms with 5' tall opening windows that have sills that are 12" above the floor. Even at 79 I can easily exit my house using any one of the 7 options available to me.

I'm not entering the funnel until I hear the voice of a deputy that I know personally.
;)

My first floor is a 15 ft tall cinder block "basement". Then, two floors of house on top of that.
Bedrooms are on the top floor.
My very enthusiastic Blue Pit bull weighs over 90lbs and presents a pressing problem for the attacker, who would be dodging .300blk rounds as he is trying to keep his pecker from being bitten off...in the dark.
Robbing a bank would be a safer alternative.

Besides that, robbing red necks with heavy equipment that can dig very deep holes in the backwoods is a great way to end up on a milk carton.

I'm with the no light group as well. My hand held light is also a taser. The only light coming from my weapon giving away my position will be muzzle flash.
You aren't supposed to use the light like a flashlight.
Use the momentary switch.
Light comes on, shoot threat, light off.
Light blinds threat, and gives you a split second to shoot the right spot.
Other threats will most likely first look where you shine the light, not into the 1000 lumen mini sun on your gun.
Remember this is in your dark home, not in a field, and we are talking about burglars, not a seal team.

👍
I have one tiny furball, but he's 11 years old and could sleep through an explosion.
I have another big one that is a muscle bound land shark that will alert and address anyone.
He makes one helluva distraction, and a major deterrent. Better than my alarm.
