I have the same question.... I plan on getting the Raptor Pro in Black and was wondering why Kimber went with the plastic MSH on some of their firearms? The steel chainlink MSH that Ed Brown makes looks awesome IMO.I can't remember. Why do we have plastic mainspring housings again? In my last TLE II I replaced the MSH with a steel one. Now I'm a TLE II owner again and want to know if there's any advantage to replacing it.
This is another one of those long going discussions I've seen on many forums and I'll say right up front I don't have a dog in this fight. I own Kimbers and have never had a problem with the plastic mainspring housing but that doesn't mean they can't break. My son has a collection of Glocks that are mostly plastic and hasn't had a problem with any of them. I'd like to know specificaly how the housings on the two Kimbers and one Colt were broken, did they just suddenly fail, were they dropped (lord knows I've dropped a gun or two on occasion) just what caused the cracked housings?Colt has used plastic too. I have seen three split and replaced them at work for guys. Two were Kimbers and one was Colts. I tend to use SA magwell mainspring housings or EGWs if the gun did not already come with one. Ie. my Team Matches and Gold Combat.
The pistols were still shooting and the breakage were discovered in tear down maintenance. Two were cracked and still held its parts. The other opened up and lost its internals due to the break allowing enough spread at the top end to no longer allow the pin to hold the plunger. This is another one of those long going discussions I've seen on many forums and I'll say right up front I don't have a dog in this fight.
