I can't remember. Why do we have plastic mainspring housings again? In my last TLE II I replaced the MSH with a steel one. Now I'm a TLE II owner again and want to know if there's any advantage to replacing it.

I have the same question.... I plan on getting the Raptor Pro in Black and was wondering why Kimber went with the plastic MSH on some of their firearms? The steel chainlink MSH that Ed Brown makes looks awesome IMO.

I replaced my MSH in my eclipse with a Ed Brown. Perfect fit and color match it gives it a little more weight. I know there's nothing wrong with the stock one other makes colt remington and others are using plastic. I don't want a plastic part on my 1911.

To save weight and cost is my guess. It's not a high stress part. That being said, I replaced the one on my Pro CDPII with a Wilson Combat MSH and Speed Chute. Love it!

I think all the best looking msh's are ed browns, but they only make full size (govt) . I have a supercarry ultra2. I especially like the snakeskin. I emailed ed brown and they said stay in touch. They are considering making for compact this year.

Colt has used plastic too. I have seen three split and replaced them at work for guys. Two were Kimbers and one was Colts. I tend to use SA magwell mainspring housings or EGWs if the gun did not already come with one. Ie. my Team Matches and Gold Combat.

This is another one of those long going discussions I've seen on many forums and I'll say right up front I don't have a dog in this fight. I own Kimbers and have never had a problem with the plastic mainspring housing but that doesn't mean they can't break. My son has a collection of Glocks that are mostly plastic and hasn't had a problem with any of them. I'd like to know specificaly how the housings on the two Kimbers and one Colt were broken, did they just suddenly fail, were they dropped (lord knows I've dropped a gun or two on occasion) just what caused the cracked housings?

The pistols were still shooting and the breakage were discovered in tear down maintenance. Two were cracked and still held its parts. The other opened up and lost its internals due to the break allowing enough spread at the top end to no longer allow the pin to hold the plunger.

How long would all be okay with the frame holding it all together I do not know. I cannot talk of them being dropped etc. they were however daily carry duty guns.

I admit to being anal. I changed out my TLE and Ultra Carry mainsprings to Wilson Combat flat checkered. It doesn't impress anyone but me!

I was wearing a 5.11 holster shirt, bent over, and my Kimber Ultra dropped out. From not more than 3 feet up, the MSH cracked. It held together and functioned, but I replaced it.
