There are other forums I visit that talk about 1911s. Sometimes there is something to be learned, sometimes not.

One thing I have learned is that there are some serious brand bigots out there. OMG, I can't get over the mindless ignorance that seems to infect people who join certain forums. It's like being part of an exclusive club to say XXX brand is crap because it has MIM parts. They actually refer to them as MIM guns.

Seriously? WTH. They need to do their homework. A great number of 1911s have some MIM parts. I wonder if they know whether or not their precious brand has a MIM part or two. It's like they are trying to find a way to justify their $3,000 1911 over someone else's $1,300 1911.

Sets my teeth on edge.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the slide, frame and barrels on most Kimbers are forged while some internal, less stressed parts are MIM. I'm no authority, but if you really have a problem with MIM then tell the Smiths at Wilson how you feel and they will accomodate your wishes ( and charge you 4500.+). As for me? I have no complaints. But some people just Have to let you know how f'ing high brow they are.

It's totally moronic. Ask Ruger about their cast frames. Modern metallurgy is a science. MIM parts are fine. It's like saying Glocks are plastic, so they are unreliable. Just idiotic.

MIM parts, a company that I will not name gave the MIM parts a bad name because they had a bad batch of MIM parts. This was many years ago. Since then remarkable things have happened.

MIM parts are extremely dense and very exact. They are much less prone to wear and breakage than a factory Colt, Spfg. etc. parts. This is why we use them in our CQB's, etc. Although not quite as hard as our tool steel parts, they will last a very long time. This is why we can still guarantee our total gun, including the MIM parts, for life.

The tool steel parts are actually overkill. The MIM parts last for life, I know of one gun that has over 100,000 rounds thru it and the trigger pull feels the same as it did when new therefore I guess you could say the tool steel parts lasts for a lifetime and ½.

We use the tool steel parts in our full custom guns. These are the ones that cost from $2800.00 up. Our full custom guns, Stealth, Tactical Elite, Super Grade and Tactical Super Grade, are not for everyone because of price. They are intended for someone that can afford the very best we can do.

They [tool steel] actually won't last any longer, shoot any straighter or be more dependable than our CQB's, Protectors and Classics, but we spend many extra hours in fitting and prepping them for a perfect cosmetic handgun as well as a great shooter. And because of this, we use the tool steel parts that take longer to fit.

Again, all of us guys here, including Bill Wilson use the very same MIM parts in our guns. And we shoot a bunch! Once installed and fit, no one can tell the difference in the feel of the trigger pull with either type of parts.

The really ironic point to the MIM issue and therefore the detractors is that ALL metal products begin life in some form of molten state. My guess is, most of the MIM detractors are too young to have heard of "sand cast".

I saw that years ago and it is credible though I do not remember how to prove it.

In 1996 Wilson produced there first complete in house guns. That was the 1996A1. Prior to that they did custom work on others guns. The 1996A1 had Kimber made slide and frame (Jerico) and was full of MIM parts. The industry and consumers went nuts. Yea a complete Wilson!! (Whoopee). Kimber does the same thing a year later at half the price. The adwars began and and Kimbers became junk.

MIM is a cost cutting means. Kimber uses it to reduce costs and increase profit margin. Kimber doesn't pass those cost savings down to you though. My Dan Wessons contain zero MIM parts and they are at a similar price point to equivalent Kimbers. However, my Wessons is vastly superior in build quality, parts quality, attention to detail and reliability to any Kimber. Kimber is like the old Cadillac Cimarron.... looks pretty on the outside, but at the heart it's just a Chevy Cavalier.
