Reliability?

912 Views 17 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Holster
Hello, all. Currently own a K6s and EVO, and couldn't be happier with both of them. But it's getting close to warmer weather around here, and I need something a bit lighter that I can stick in my waist when I'm wearing lighter clothing and no belt.

BUT...I'm also a former Solo owner, and would hate to make THAT kind of mistake again.

So I thought this was the perfect place to ask if the Micro is a reliable little pistol. I know there were a lot of posts here a while back from disappointed owners who couldn't get theirs to run right. Are those bugs pretty much straightened out, or is it pretty hit or miss?

Thanks much.....

I feel your pain. As proud owner of a Solo paper weight I understand your concerns. I currently own 2 Micro 9s and both have been flawless out of the box. My wife carries the STG daily a d I have the Boot Camp Edition. Break them in with round nose ammo, run them wet at first, keep your thumb off the mag release and you should be fine. If you have issue Kimber will fix it inside of 2 weeks. What more can you ask for?

You didn't mention caliber. Although you probably mean 9mm Generic, I will share my experience with the Micro380.

I have a number of 380's, including Beretta 84F, Beretta 85BB, S&W Shield 380EZ, Sig P238, Colt M1908, and Kimber Micro380.

The P238 and Micro380 are incredibly easy to carry. I can completely forget I have it on. There was a training period to be able to reasonably present such a small gun from concealment.

The Kimber Micro380 is the most accurate 380 I own, including pistols with barrels almost an inch longer. I don't know if it is lock-up, my ability to handle it (the Kimber is the smallest), my ability to use these sights, or some other factor. The difference is significant. I can do a 5 shot ragged hole with the Micro380 at 15 yards, off-hand, but the P238 will be a much loser at maybe 4" in diameter. To be clear, I can't do that back to back to back, those were my best 5 shot strings. Some were much worse and that was slow fire.

The Kimber Micro380 was reliable for about 150 rounds from initial purchase in 2015. Then I didn't shoot it for several years. Now, I am starting to get some failures. I wrote to Kimber. They want me to call in, which I will do after I do another range trip. They did suggest I might need to swap out the spring. I am confident the Micro380 will be reliable enough for carry. I'd prefer to carry it as the Kimber is smaller and feels better than P238.

Right now, when I carry "light," I carry the P238.

Summer clothes no belt. I'd go with a small polymer striker gun in a pocket holster. If you need to be concealed.

Ruger LCP Max. Maybe a Taurus G2? P365? Small, light, very reliable. Nobody is going to be impressed but who cares. It goes bang. You could buy two Max-9's for the price of a Micro 9. Also if a striker gun in your pocket makes you uneasy, they do have a model with a manual safety, so you can carry locked. I think the Ruger has the best profile for a polymer pocket gun. No sharp edges, doesn't print as much as many others.

If you go OWB, then I see no reason to not go with something metal like the Micro 9. Then again, if that's how you carry maybe consider an Ultra Carry and get the full 1911 Monte for not much more weight.

Personally, I dont want to strap on any metal gun when I'm wearing light summer clothes. It gets hotter than Hades where I live now. But everybody has their own preferences.

Applaud your research here. We can't afford to be blindly faithful to any brand when lives are on the line. Haven't shot mine enough to honestly be the help you seek. Will share when it has consumed a considerable ammount of ammo.

Good luck in your quest. Be safe.

Ultra Carry is what you seek.

It's a little bigger than a Micro, it's a true 1911, 3" barrel, reliable, accurate, 9mm or .45, comes in several flavors.

+1 Carried one for years to work and still do on the rare occasions I need something smaller than the Micro 9.

I think you’re asking about the micro 380. If so, I have a two tone and it’s been 100% reliable! Also have two micro 9s. Just a few ounces heavier, at one pound. They’ve been 100% as well! These are four years old or more, so not new new production. I think you’d be pleased with either, but the 380 is noticeably smaller!

Aren't those even heavier than the EVO, though? I'm really looking for something for summer clothes when I'm not wearing a belt.

Sans belt?
Please tell me you aren't planning on shoving the gun loose in a pocket.

Get a belt and a proper holster.

Excellent advice/post there ninja. (y)

Reminds me of my very stubborn BIL, who's not really a 'gun guy', and carries a Sig P938 loose in his pocket any time he's out of the house. He owns a very nice custom Adams Leatherworks IWB rig, made just for that weapon, and despite all the stories like the ones above I forward to him, he still carries his little roscoe in his pocket, sans holster. And the real kicker here, he carries it in Condition 3, with an empty chamber.

You can offer sound advice, but it's up to the recipient to actually follow the advice when given. Seems some people never learn, and it's my hope that my BIL doesn't learn the hard way.

When I carry that snub 357 in my pocket it goes in a pocket holster to keep that trigger covered. I've never had a NG and don't want one👍

Your BIL: Pardon me sir, but would you kindly wait just a moment while I rack my slide? Thank you. Proceed with your armed robbery.

Nope. IWB with a holster, usually one with an Ulticlip.
