Getting tired of shops who ask me why I want a Kimber Sapphire. Getting tired of being asked why I don't buy a Phillipines made rock Island for half the price. Tired of hearing "for that I'll spray paint your whole gun!"

Tell them you prefer an American classic to a Yugo, but he can drive whatever he likes.

I like a little attitude with that response.

Yep, seems to be a constant theme. If they don't sell it, every thing they do sell is better anyway.

Bottom line, they are just poor salesmen. If you are selling suits and the customer says "I want a yellow suit" you tell them how great they look in it and then see if you can sell him two suits....a yellow one and a black one. Once he sees himself in the black one he probably will forget the yellow one. But you don't say "you don't really want that yellow suit!" Because what he will do is go down the street where a real salesman will sell him a yellow suit and get a loyal customer. It ain't rocket science. I'm often shocked at the incompetence of some sales people in stores, restaurants, etc.

It's more than salesmanship, it's like it's personal. True story here. Here in Arizona there is a gun shop called Guns Ect. in Chandler. The husband wife team and their counter people are all stuck up jerks. The don't joke or smile. Its like you're bothering them to be there.
So this past Thursday we went at lunch. My buddy wanted to compare a few pocket 9mm. I was looking at the 1911 and asked if he had a Solo. He said no that's when I saw that Royal and was admiring it. He said it was over priced and he proceeded to say how long he had it on the shelf.
A few minuets later a husband and wife walk in and their looking around the guy ask about Rock Island 1911s. This same dope who was helping me who bashed Kimber tells this guy that Rock Island is a solid 1911 and hadn't heard of any problems and highly recommends it.
Don't go ever to Guns Ect.

+1

Sounds like he is more interested in putting on a show rather than locking down a sale. He's got the script running in his head, and he's struggling to actually listen to what YOU, the guy with all the hundred dollar bills in your pocket, want.

Give me the facts. But save your opinion for after I ask, please. Hired guy or owner? I must say, there do appear to be opportunities in the gun store business for a tight operator with plenty of capital.

Once you've researched the salient points, get the gun you want.

Took one week on another forum to learn that people have very strong feelings about gun brands. Chevy v ford. .45 v .40 Coke v Pepsi .....ad infinitum

Paleeease. Why in the world do we have different brands? To make us dumber?

Clearly you are all above average intelligence here :)

A good salesman sells. A bad salesman tells.

A good salesman asks me what I like. A bad salesman wants to show me what he likes.

A good salesman makes me feel smart. A bad salesman wants to show how smart he is.

A good salesman wants to keep me as a customer. A bad salesman just wants to keep my money.

A good salesman gives me a reason to keep coming back. A bad salesman gives me a reason to never go back.

When a salesman is good, I spread the word. When a salesman is bad, I spread the word.

They need to remember, if you are treated well you tell 10 people. If you are treated poorly you tell 20. Are the Kimbers the best gun for the money? I'm not sure. I love 1911's and Kimbers and Dan Wessons are my favorite. I really don't appreciate salespeople who make sweeping opinionated comments about guns they have never owned or shot. I like my Glock 19 and 22 a lot! It's fairly accurate, incredibly dependable, easy as hell to field strip and clean, and half (or less) the cost of a Kimber.
But when i shoot a Kimber I'm in heaven. And your salesman is right. A Rock Island is a decent gun. But it ain't no Kimber.
