If this is in wrong Topic please move as needed. Not sure I need one but I have a interest in buying a 7.62/.308 rifle. Want a auto NOT a bolt gun. Can't afford the Kimber rifles. Looking at a budget of around $1,600.00 or less. Can be AR10-AK47 type, not a fanboy of any certain brand. Got confused looking at all the different models. Wanted to find out which rifles in 7.62/.308 that our members are shooting. Not going to be an urban sniper but want a accurate and reliable rifle. What you all got? Thanks

My son/DIL have a Remington 700 .308 that is really sharp. If you go that way, be sure the one you're considering isn't part of the recall.

I'd love to have an AR-10, but unless you're shooting 400+ yards I'd look strongly at the 300 AAC Blackout upper to fit on my AR-15 lower. But that's just me. (don't forget to put a can on it)

For really long range shooting, I'd have to consider the .338 Lapua ( @ $5.00 / round) (oops, just checked. not in your price limit. sorry)

What kind of gun are you looking for? Bolt or auto?

I have a Kimber bolt .308. Fantastic gun. You can find them on GB for a lot less than $1300. Remington is nice, but they just had a recall. You also can't go wrong with Savage.

If you are looking at an auto, an AR-10, you should look at DPMS. Thereis always the classic M1A as well.

Don't forget that, especially if you get a bolt action, you will need a scope and scope rings, and that will add in some more money. Is you budget for a gun only, or the whole package?

If you're considering a bolt action I have a Tikka T3 rifle and it is awesome for the price. I bought the stainless with laminated stock and think it looks as good as it shoots. I am not an AR guy so cannot help you there.

Don't y'all have a Sportsman's Warehouse in Chattanooga? If it's anything like the one in Fairbanks, Alaska they'll have tons of options to consider.

I love that store (in Fairbanks.)

Yeah, looking for auto, not bolt action. This is a just in case rifle. I am not going hunting in the Rockies or anything.
Love the old school classic look and history of the M1A. The DPMS in .308 is in the running. I ran across the Sig 556R with stands for Russian, it comes with a red/green dot scope, looks interesting. Trying to get outside the box and stop being such a fuddy duddy so not looking for a bolt action. I have only owned a "black" rifle (Bushmaster) since last November, so still trying to warm up to that style weapon. Just getting a feel for what you guys own.

Yes, we have a Sportsman's Warehouse. They usually have a good selection except at Christmas time. Got a better deal at Acadamy Sports on my Carbon 15 Bushmaster.

Well, since you're looking at semi-auto I can tell you I really like my S&W M&P-15. I can only suppose that their M&P-10 would be as good. I've never shot one, but always wanted to. :D

Yeah, that M&P 10 is on my list. I am in the research stage right now. Will try to check some out in stores or some gun shows. Not in a hurry to purchase. Right now without seeing anything in person and judging just from what I have seen online I am leaning toward the Sig 556R Russian, looks to have a lot of features for the money.

You might consider getting an M1 Garand from CMP for around $600, and they deliver it to your door. 30.06, but it's a true main battle rifle.

Go to M4carbine.net and checkout "Beyond 5.56" area. There quite a few high volume shooters there that report regularly on their rifles. Staying below 2k and not going real heavy I would look at the Ruger if I had to have a piston gun or the new Gen II DPMS. But myself I would buy the components and build my own DI gun on the SR25 pattern not the AR10. The SR25 pattern (which DPMS is) offers cheaper mags and can use Magpul Pmags at less than $20 per.

My 2 Cents Worth!!

My thoughts on the subject are the Smith and Wesson M&P 10 or the DPMS AR-10 Oracle!. Both are in you budget wheelhouse. Either would be fine for anything you could ask of a .308 caliber rifle!!;););)

This here is a MAS 49/56. The MAS is a French main battle rifle. It was a modification of the MAS 49, and modified in 1956. It was produced until 1965, and remained in service in the military until 1979, with the reserves until 1992, and still with the police. The barrel length is 20.7" and overall it's 40". Flash hider/muzzle brake is standard. The bolt handle is white plastic. Looks funny, but it easy to grip. This is actually well thought out. It also has an integral scope mount.

The rifle shoots the 7.5x54 French cartridge. It's comparable to the .308 but a little more powerful.

This thing is built to last. All steel. Parkerized. Direct impingement. The rifle is unbelievably easy to break down- takes about 5 seconds. It breaks down like an SKS. Take of the cover, the main spring slides out, the bolt and carrier come out and the firing pin slides right out. seriously, it could not be easier.

And, it comes with a built in grenade launcher. How cool is that! Of course, there aren't any grenades handy, but it is still neat nevertheless.

The magazine clips in by way of an external clip on the mag. It locks up really solidly. This is a 10 round magazine, but they say there are higher capacity ones available, although I haven't really seen one.

This is a very accurate and nice shooting gun. Many reports say it's a better gun than the M14. Before you make the French jokes, keep in mind that the French invented smokeless powder and automatic rifles. This gun was used in Indochina and Algeria and all over Africa, by the Army and the Foreign Legion, and we all know the Foreign Legion was pretty bad ass.

These guns are available at a very reasonable price too. The downside is ammo can be tough to find sometimes but you can reload for it too. Century imported some of these and converted them to .308 and by all accounts totally screwed them up. Don't get one in .308. The ones in the 7.5 caliber are said to operate flawlessly.

Recoil was negligible. About like an AR, which means none. Accurate. By the way, it's on the C&R list. So if your looking for something a little different that all the guys at the range want to shoot, this is it.

Gman, that MAS 49/56 is a fine looking rifle. I love the old school military look. I think I would have to pass on the MAS mainly due to the possible problem finding ammo for it. Thanks for the pics, I don't think I have seen one of those before, if I did I did not know what it was.
With all my reading and research I am liking the DPMS GenII Recon, a couple others are in the running but the DPMS is leading the pack.
Later on I also want a M1A Loaded in stainless with wood stocks, just because I love the looks and history with the rifle.
Now the task at hand is to save up $$.

I really like my sig 716 patrol. It's an AR style gun in 308 that is a piston gun and uses pmags. If you hunt around you can probably find one close to your price range. It's fairly heavy like most AR-10 style guns but the recoil is comparable to my AR-15 in 223.
