ultra II stainless

I have a new one coming. Since I normally carry a K6s, I figure the weight will be fine.
Other than clean and break-in what do I need to learn?
It's my first 1911 and 9mm. I'm not planning to carry it...yet.

One of the biggest mistakes new owners make is failure to read the owner's manual. Everything you will need to know to get you started as a first time 1911 owner will be in the manual, one is included with the gun or can be downloaded here. I think you made a great choice with the ultra, it's IMHO the best gun Kimber makes.

"Other than clean and break-in what do I need to learn?" How to shoot it. DO NOT limp wrist a 1911. You will be asking for trouble. Grab that sucker and hold it like you mean to, (it causes the grip safety to disengage). It's single action. Put one in the chamber, from the mag, then replace the one in the mag. It has two safeties. Use them both. Cocked and locked, (hammer back, with a round in the chamber is normal). Enjoy! John M. Browning was proud of it. You should be too.

I would order a custom holster now because it will arrive by the time you decide to carry your new Ultra. Spare magazines are always good to have for the range or carry. Self defense rounds are always fun to shop for. The most important thing about picking SD rounds is choose what the gun likes not what the advertisement says. You will have a hard time finding a bad SD ammo that’s made in the USA.

Congratulations on another awesome Kimber.
Invest in some quality mags. Then a quantity of range ammo. 1,000 round cases are not excessive.

Trigger time on your 1911 is the best investment you can make. Be safe and enjoy.

Be aware that Kimber sometimes lets one slip through with a problem, although that seems to be more of an issue with the Micro and Micro 9. If that's the case, don't hesitate to call their Customer Service team. You may have to send it back, but they'll pay shipping both ways and you'll have it back in 10 days or less. They often do more than what is needed to get it right.

Well as far as "one slipping through", you may have noticed I carry a Smith. My last three purchased needed to revisit their creator. Not one of them came back the same month.

Thank you for the replies everyone. All is appreciated.
I shoot bullseye with revolvers (rimfire and center fire) but the 1911 guys have got me interested.

...as a reminder:
1. firm grip & no limp wrist
2. shoot the gun with the slide grooves wet during breakin period
3. load and insert the magazine and sling shot load the first round-just like it says in the manual
4. carry in condition 1 (cocked and locked) because it is a 1911
5. clean thoroughly (I recommend cleaning the extractor after a few hundred rounds...)
6. for 9mm I recommend breaking it in with 124 grain FMJ
enjoy

With your background there will be no problem. And the learning curve will be accelerated.

Don't be intimidated how many talk about it. Have taught many petite women to shoot 1911 45 in their very first range time. They had no trouble at all. Stock pistol and standard range ammo didn't even overly impress them as to recoil.

With some trigger time you will be asking the other 1911 guys to come out and play.
Please be safe. Enjoy the adventure.
