Ever considered what your greatest threat might be? What, if any, methods do you utilize to prepare for that possibility?

I thought it would be an interesting discussion. Also to do a poll and later compare the results to actual crime data - the most common types of self-defense situations reported involving a firearm*.

* using the FBI's violent crime data, which some may not trust.

The results will be skewed a bit, compared to the FBI Data.

My most likely scenario is an rural assault or robbery, or maybe a church shooting, because I spend the vast majority of my time in a rural environment, not because crime is rampant here.
Violent crime here is pretty rare, here and an assault here is unlikely.
That said, I train with the mindset that it can happen.

For me I have a few. Mass shooting in mall or grocery store. Then home invasion. For me carrying all the time and being alert and vigilant and thinking about where a threat could come from is important. We have video door bell and always watch before opening door. Keep my guns close in the house especially night stand. Practice frequently with my guns and knowing there limits. I think of the people who walk around with things in there ears listening to music or talking with someone and how oblivious they are to there surroundings. If anything would happen how would they know? I am right handed and I have my wife always walk on my left. There are many more and look forward to reading what people write!

One of the few full-time residents here in the Hillbilly Hamptons going berserk is unlikely here as well. The most likely scenario is an unhinged vacationer - road rage or a similar circumstance involving a vehicle on the beach. People lose their tempers all the time when the tourists show up and driving on the beach becomes difficult. The good news is a lot of the visitors are from NY and NJ - so they won't own any guns. :) Our deputies say Virgininans are the worst for some reason. Ill-tempered and most likely to get arrested for reckless driving (on the beach), being drunk as a hootowl, or fighting. The visiting Yankees from NY, NJ, PA tend to be members of the Gentry. The Virginians are most often Bubbas and Bubbettes. Beach day trippers who sleep in their trucks at night (no overnight camping on the beach). For example:

Living in a rural environment I can foresee a potential home invasion based on the strange visitors we've gotten from time to time. We live on a well traveled main road and have had our share of strange occurrences. I pretty much carry 24/7 or have a firearm at arms reach when relaxing in the evening.

I live so far off the beaten path, in a pretty secure area, there is a higher risk of Chinese ninja Islamic terrorist attacking me than some random crook traveling down a dirt road to the swamp to steal my flat screen.
The closest major city is Savannah, which is two hours away. I roll heavy when I have business in a city.
Keep in mind EVERYONE in Georgia is armed.

I would think your biggest threat would be transplanted liberals from Wilmington or thugs from Raleigh sneaking out to the coast.

When I had my place on Topsail, the biggest danger was the crooked local cops.

Surprisingly, other than the people born and raised here (approx 200 full time residents), few of the residents are bonafide Tarheels. Most of the true locals have a family history of being watermen. Crabbers, fisherman, oysters, etc. The remainder are retired Yankees who own vacation homes but are still residents of someplace up north. Cops here are few and are friendly to locals. The County lockup is two hours away. If a deputy has to arrest someone (it's always a tourist), that drive puts him in a very bad mood.

In the off-season, the biggest threat is burglary because there are so many empty vacation homes. But strangers in the off-season rarely escape the attention of locals. Get caught robbing a house up here and you may get arrested. Or may end up becoming crab bait. It's cheaper than chicken necks.

I wish I could rank these in the poll in order of likelihood instead of just voting for one. Where I live has changed significantly over the past 10 years, leading to some things becoming possible that would have been very unlikely 10 years ago. I happen to live in one of the outer suburbs of Seattle, right at the boundary between rural and suburban. We are one of the suburbs that has seen dramatic growth based on urban flight over the past 3 years. That has led to an increase in crime, drug use, and homelessness in our little town.

We are also one of the Seattle suburbs that was targeted when BLM/AntiFa said they were going to go into the suburban environment. Fortunately for everyone concerned, it was a short lived incursion.

We also have one of the largest school districts in the state, and a single, very large, high school. With the above changes, and the impact on kids of the Pandemic lockdowns, active shooter issues at either the high school or nearby shopping centers, are more likely than in the past.

I would rank as follows, based on that

1. Active shooter
2. Home invasion
3. Rural environment - robbery/assault (we are right at the edge of rural)
4. Urban environment - robbery/assault (I go into Bellevue fairly often)
5. Road rage
6. Unhinged family, friend, neighbor

I would say home invasion. I also live in a tourist area and I’d say 40% of the home owners don’t live in the community. They have 2nd homes here. Home invasions happen from time to time because the houses can be empty for long periods of time.

I live in a gated community but my backyard is a public road so outsiders have easy access. There is also a camp ground behind my house. It’s never been a problem but outsiders have access.

We also get renters who get drunk and tend to do stupid things. I’m all for having drinks and a good time but you still should respect the fact that people live here full time.

The poll numbers are running different from what I thought they would be. It closes on the 17th.

There was a mention of multiple choice and ranking by @Ecowper . You can decide to do multiple choice when creating a poll but not ranking as far as I could tell. What I was really looking for in this is to try and gauge what is the one thing you have to train for. Because for most people it isn't practical to train for every possible scenario. A ranking would be interesting. Maybe do that sometime down the road or as a follow-up if the tool supports it.

I'll hold further comments on the running totals until the poll closes because that can sometimes shift or influence responses.

I’ll just say this …. Having done some pretty advanced concealed carry/tactical pistol training, I actually think that most scenarios that civilians carrying a pistol every day will face are very similar in how the civilian should approach them.

1. Assess the threat
2. Decide what level of force is appropriate
3. Engage that level of force if you are capable.

#3 is the hard part. Just ask Eli Dickens

Sorry I answered this before I saw the list. The one thing I train for is mass shooting. I do tis by always carrying and being alert

Sorry to hear that Virginians have such a bad reputation. I’m a native Virginian and still live in the state, the western “*******” side of it! We do have our share of buttholes and idiots here! But they are still a minority. Most people here are good folks! Unfortunately, as drug use has increased, so have the idiots! Some Neighbors know I carry, so that may reduce the risk of home invasion. I feel that the possibility of some dopehead nut job trying to get famous for copying an idiot they saw on the news is the main threat, whether it’s one on one outdoors or a store shooting. Either case, I’ll be armed.

I personally have no beef with Virginians. There are dumbasses everywhere. At the peak of the season, we have mostly families renting beach homes. There are very few beaches you can drive on in VA. So a small number of buttheads from Ol' Virginny make the trek to the Cape Hatteras area with their 8 inch lift kits and loud pipes, along with two big flags planted in the bed stake holes. One is always a rebel flag and this year the other says "F__K Biden" in 12 inch tall letters. Now, I have no love at all for Sleepy Joe, but there are little kids everywhere that don't need to be edumacated by a mouth-breathing wife beater with a Billy Ray Cyrus mullet on the finer points of American politics. The guy who thinks Bill O'Wrights was one of the signers of the Declurashun of Independunce. You know, that Irish guy who is on the 500-dollar bill.

The good news is.... next summer the county is gating the entrance ramp to the beach. Residents and vacation home renters only. Buh bye to the Bubba's and their monster trucks.

This is my ranking for where we live in north Alabama just shy of the Tennessee line. We live in the country, we can't see our neighbors house, driveway is 1/4 mile long and people don't come to our house unless they have business, our neighbors have all lived here for 15 years or more and we all watch each others places as we can (read driving in or out of our driveway). There has been a lot of growth south of us in Huntsville/Madison area as well to the west in and around Athens Alabama...
...with the influx of people and lowest unemployment in the area... ...our traffic is increasing a lot, our roads, schools, hospitals, utilities policing, etc are not keeping up.... ...and yes, crime is increasing as well....

For me it would be a robbery or assault in an urban environment. I park in some pretty sketchy areas waiting to load and unload. The warehouse districts aren't your better parts of most towns. I usually get to see the tweekers/dealers and the ladies of the night along with their "employers" at their absolute finest. The homeless are pretty harmless but some have mental issues that put them on another planet if not dimension. It isn't their fault and I respect that. It doesn't mean I'm risking my life over it. What's that old say? Nothing good ever happened after 2 am.

Most don't bother with me. I'm a pretty big guy and after all my years of working Corrections I kinda have a permanent a hole look on my face so most people avoid me anyway 🙃. I really am a helluva nice guy though. Regardless of the Repulik of Commifonia or her surrounding burbs I keep at least one weapon in the truck and on my person at all times. I don't go brandishing or making a spectacle of myself. Daisy and I pretty much keep to ourselves.
